Long synopsis : A black, highly political fable of power and corruption, vengeance and renunciation, set in the violent, cannibalistic world of business and high finance, In The Company Of Men is the story of a young man, Léonard, adopted son of the wealthy arms dealer Henri Jurrieu, caught in a web of lies and brutality. Desperate to escape from beneath Jurrieu's shadow, Léonard is manoeuvred into an ill-advised business deal which leaves him open to blackmail at the hands of his father's vengeful enemies. Trapped in a world of which he finally wants no part, he is forced to betray Jurrieu in order to keep his love and respect, and when this is no longer bearable, to renounce everything. Adapted from Edward Bond's play, and drawing on both Al Pacino's Looking For Richard and the classic US thrillers of the 70s, Desplechin's film is a compelling tragedy, rich in violent poetry, a savage portrait of a divided world.
