Long synopsis : A feature-length documentary examining MoveOn.Org, the largest progressive grassroots movement since the 1960s, and one of the major players in the upcoming 2008 U.S. Presidential election. A child of the Internet age, MoveOn.Org was born in Silicon Valley and has spread through the Net to become one of the most voracious, liberal and controversial powers in American politics. It is David to the White House Goliath. With a mailing list of over 3 million people, MoveOn.Org rests on the strength of its members, and is best understood through their individual stories. The reverend who doesn’t want to bury another 19-year-old killed in Iraq. The unemployed Virginia woman, cleaning yards to be able to give money to MoveOn.Org. The Boston social worker disgusted by his country’s treatment of the sick. And up the chain all the way to its vociferous and energetic leaders. MoveOn.Org has created a revolutionary system of fundraising through the Internet. Combining the small donations of average citizens, it has created a tidal wave that is shaking the traditional foundations of power in Washington. It is a tiny organization, but its liberal politics and promotional flair have earned it influential friends: some famous (Matt Damon, Moby, Oliver Stone); some political (Howard Dean); and some controversial (George Soros). Its visceral tactics and aggressive style have also made MoveOn.Org serious enemies, on both left and right. This film traces a historic journey through one of the most tumultuous decades in American history - and its effects on the past ten years of our lives. Seamlessly constructed from intimate behind-the-scenes footage, members’ home movies, archive film and interviews with politicians and celebrities both for and against the group, MoveOn: Storming The Gate stands as a call to arms and vivid testimony to our times.
